Politics and Fashion a glamorous combination???

Carla Bruni – Supermodel turned First Lady of France

Politics and Fashion let’s have a look at who’s wearing what and who’s got the media (and with that by default the public’s) vote…  we’ll have a quick look through the Fashionista Contenders, the Fashionista Underdogs and examine each Fashionista’s Style Credentials …

The Fashionista Contenders:

Team EuropeFrench first Lady Carla Bruni- Sarkozy Vs. Sarah Brown British first Lady

Team USA First Ladies in waiting – Michelle O Bama Vs. Cindy McCain

Fashionista Underdog:

Cindy McCain for being a republican (it’s kind of untrendy because of the whole Bush thing!) & not as young and hip as her rival – Michelle Obama.

Sarah Brown she may be England’s first lady but she’s no English rose in the eyes of the press, she just does not have the French Chic Je ne sai quoi  that comes so effortlessly to the First Lady of France who is incidentally not French but Italian…

Fashionista’s by Style credentials:

1.       Michelle Obama’s Style   in a word – chic and affordable!

Style credentials:

She is very much the modern woman, successful career, darling children and charismatic husband. She is the American Dream as she fought her way into the Ivy League all the way to Harvard from a deprived childhood in Chicago …

Included in the Vanity Fair International Best dressed list 2008

Vanity Fair called her “our commander in sheath” giving her style the official stamp of commercial approval

American women follow her fashion lead – Ricco had been designing dresses for more than 20 years, but it wasn’t until Michelle Obama sported Ricco’s black-and-white leaf-print shift — sold at the White House Black Market Store, for $148 — on “The View,” and women across America went wild for it. She is credited with making the dress sell out within hours. Ricco, who wasn’t watching “The View” when her design made its TV debut, had no idea, Obama would be wearing it. “Apparently she just bought it off the rack,” says Ricco. “I didn’t realize until people started calling me, and then I watched the show on Youtube.” Source: NYDailyNews.com

Seal of approval from the press as Michelle has had more positive press coverage than Cindy

2.       Cindy McCain’s Style – in a word – prim and proper!

Style credentials:

Cindy is a cross between Second Wives Club meets Gossip Girl, look wise she does look rather Barbie-esque but that’s selling Cindy short she has overcome 7 miscarriages and an addition to painkillers after a stroke, she is a strong woman that stands by her man no matter what.

Excluded from Vanity Fair list – Cindy McCain was left off the coveted roster as she must’ve felt like, well, sheath, from the snub.

Negative press – Cindy McCain made news for all the wrong reasons while getting a private peek at Oscar de la Renta’s fall line (her bodyguards were left to stand outside the designer’s studio in the heat which gave the story away). Cindy came across as too pampered and it became a down-to-earth versus high maintenance story played out in the headlines!

Sacrificing her look to imitate the popular choice –   As of late Cindy has been changing her look that’s been deemed ‘rigid’ in tabloids. Earlier this month she traded her updo for a wavier head of hair and without saying a word, she let it be known she can cut loose. Compromising on personal style for votes … not a good move, I think Cindy McCain should stick with what works for her. The message she sends out by imitating Obama is that her look is better. Unfortunately Cindy has been caught up in the Obama-Mania and no matter what she does she won’t win.

Cindy – be yourself if you like prim and proper roll with it!

3.       Carla Bruni – Supermodel turned First Lady of France

Style credentials:

She courts the media like a pro, she can do no wrong – The French first Lady Carla Bruni- Sarkozy is undeniably the media darling, her nude photographs, her many lovers and their wronged wives cannot keep this bombshell under wraps she’s exploded onto the political scene and she is loved for it..

She’s got the look, – Carla is an Ex- Supermodel and reined during the times of Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington etc.  1990’s

Inclusion of the Vanity Fair Best Dressed list

Seal of approval from designers and press in general

Karl Lagerfeld recently gave the supermodel his stamp of approval

Compared to Jackie O and Hailed as the ‘Most fashionable First Lady’ Vanity Fair  – Vanity Fair dubbed her the new Jackie O and featured her on the cover of their September issue (the same issues that included the international best dressed list) and she was of course included in the best dressed list.

She takes the September cover of Vanity Fair and is interviewed – The piece is written by Maureen Orth, for Vanity Fair with the article portraying Ms. Bruni as a modern sort of woman who values her independence, remains friends with her many lovers (and their wives!), and prefers a president who wears blue jeans.

Find extracts from the article below as Ms. Bruni’s explains herself and Karl Lagerfeld declares her the most enviable first lady!

On her independence:
“I think it is a major duty for a woman to be independent. Independence was my obsession when I was 20. It was not making money; it was making my own money. Modeling meant I did not have to rely on my parents or a man.”

On Her past lovers:
“It’s not that I had a lot of lovers. It’s that I never hide them. It’s a different thing. I have not one day of regret. I have a very good relationship with exes. I have a good relationship with all the boyfriends I had. Sometimes I’m the godmother of their children. I’m always good friends with their wives.

On her nude photos:
“I never realized how many nude pictures I did before I met Nicolas. I took him and said, ‘O.K., now I need to show you, because I posed in the nude. But I never did sexy pictures. They’re great artists. Plus, I have a body that would allow me to pose nude without being very provocative.”

On how the French press covered their relationship:
[Nicolas] from our generation. He doesn’t want to lie. He doesn’t want to have a second family somewhere. He never thought that our going to Egypt would make such a fuss. We took three days, and it lasted weeks and weeks [in the press]. It looks like we spent five weeks lying on the beach, and we spent two hours. And for one hour he talked with Bernard Kouchner, because they were working hard. I said, ‘Nicolas, it’s not fair that people think you don’t work just because you’ve been wearing jeans with me.

Plus: Karl Lagerfeld on Ms. Bruni’s new status:
“She’s imaginative, clever, educated. She knows how to behave. She speaks many languages. It must be an embarrassment for the wives of other heads of state to see this beautiful creature who can wear anything and speak like that. They are hunters who met—predators. It’s a good thing. He had seduced many women, and she was a kind of seductress. When two like this meet, it can be good.”

Karl Lagerfeld neglects to state that Bruni’s English is hilarious and not really coherent…  We’ll give her an E for Effort.

4.       Sarah Brown – wife of Gordon Brown British PM – she keeps a low profile and wears British designers

She works in PR, but she seems at a lost on how to improve her public image and in the rivalry between Carla and Sarah it seems that Carla is the real PR guru

She supports British Designs and has been dubbed Boring compared to her chic French counterpart.
